Launched in 2004, the Maserati MC12 marks the return of the Italian brand to motor racing after more than 30 years of absence. Developed to meet the requirements of GT1 homologation, it was produced in 50 units, including 25 in 2005. Designed on the basis of the Ferrari Enzo, it stands out with a redesigned carbon fiber body, optimized to reduce drag and increase aerodynamic downforce.

This example is offered for sale by Joe Macari Performance Cars, without a publicly disclosed price. However, recent transactions for similar vehicles suggest a value close to 5 million euros before taxes ($ 5,240,525).

A model derived from the Ferrari Enzo, adapted to Maserati’s ambitions

While Ferrari continued its dominance in Formula 1, Maserati took a different approach by entering the MC12 in the FIA GT Championship. Although it shares its monocoque structure and engine with the Enzo, its larger dimensions400 mm longer and 50 mm wider – give it a stronger presence on both the track and the road. Developed under the direction of Frank Stephenson, its bodywork features a reduced drag coefficient and improved aerodynamic load, ensuring greater stability at high speeds.

One of the distinctive features of the MC12 is its removable hardtop, a characteristic absent from the Enzo, allowing for open-air driving while maintaining optimal rigidity.

Maserati MC12 – Engine and Performance

The Maserati MC12 is equipped with a 6.0-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine, directly derived from the Ferrari F140B, delivering 621 horsepower and 481 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a 6-speed Cambiocorsa transmission, this engine enables a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in 3.8 seconds and a top speed exceeding 330 km/h.

Its carbon fiber monocoque chassis and double wishbone suspension provide dynamic handling suitable for track use. The downforce generated by its fixed rear wing and rear diffuser enhances grip in high-speed corners.

Maserati MC12 – A History Defined by FIA Competition

On the track, the MC12 GT1 established itself as one of the most dominant cars in the FIA GT Championship. Between 2004 and 2010, it secured 40 victories, including two wins at the 24 Hours of Spa, and helped Maserati claim six consecutive FIA GT1 championship titles. This racing success further enhances its status as an iconic model for collectors today.

A Preserved Example with Only 285 km

The example offered here is one of the best-preserved Maserati MC12 units in the world, with only 285 km since its delivery in 2005. Originally delivered by Loris Kessel Auto SA in Switzerland, it was kept by its first owner in Lugano without ever being used. In 2014, it was acquired by a collector in Japan, before being transferred to Hong Kong in 2016. With each change of ownership, maintenance was rigorously followed, including an inspection performed in 2018 at Auto Italia in Hong Kong when it had only 179 km on the odometer.

In 2023, it returned to Europe, where it was acquired by its current owner. This MC12 comes with its original documents, car cover, tool kit, and tire inflator, and even retains its factory tires from 2005.

A Highly Sought-After Model in the Collector’s Market

The Maserati MC12 is an iconic model from the modern hypercar era. Compared to the Ferrari Enzo, it is rarer, with only 50 units produced versus 400 Enzos. Its market value has shown a steady increase in recent years, with transactions regularly exceeding 4 million euros for well-preserved examples.

Its place in motorsport history, combined with its rarity and low mileage, makes it a prime opportunity for collectors and investors in the hypercar market.

Comparison with Other Models

The Maserati MC12 belongs to a category of high-performance vehicles developed in the 2000s, featuring a naturally aspirated engine and a carbon fiber construction. Its architecture is directly derived from the Ferrari Enzo program, but it presents notable differences in dimensions, aerodynamics, and usage.

Comparison with the Ferrari Enzo

The Ferrari Enzo and the Maserati MC12 share a 5,998 cm³ V12 engine, derived from the Ferrari F140B block. The Enzo produces 660 hp, compared to 621 hp for the MC12, due to different electronic tuning and a distinct exhaust system. In terms of performance, the Enzo accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, slightly faster than the MC12 (3.8 seconds), mainly due to the calibration of the Cambiocorsa transmission on the Maserati.

Aerodynamics is the key differentiating factor between the two models. The MC12 measures 5,143 mm in length, compared to 4,702 mm for the Enzo. Its width is 2,096 mm versus 2,035 mm, and its wheelbase of 2,800 mm is 150 mm longer than the Enzo’s. These dimensions impact its dynamic behavior, prioritizing stability and aerodynamic downforce with a fixed rear wing, while the Enzo features a retractable spoiler.

The Enzo was produced in 400 units, whereas the MC12 is limited to just 50 examples. This production volume influences market demand, with resale values generally higher for the Maserati, mainly due to its rarity and successful motorsport history.
