The 40A was built only on the long chassis, with a 2,710 mm wheelbase. The Type 40 was offered as a closed tourer and, as the 40A, as a small roadster; few 40A saloons were made and more open cars.
Bugatti built the Type 40 at Molsheim, in Alsace, from 1926: about 830 cars, joined around 1930 by a few dozen 40As.
