The J250 shares the body-on-frame GA-F platform with the larger J300, with 50 per cent more frame rigidity, electric power steering and 221 mm of ground clearance. Approach and departure angles are 31 and 22 degrees, the breakover angle 25 degrees, and an electronically locking rear differential is standard.

Toyota revealed the J250 on 2 August 2023. Its boxy styling is drawn from the J60 of the 1980s, and the design brief was practicality, durability and dependability.
