The W 52 was the sister model of the W 23, built by Auto Union at Siegmar near Chemnitz from 1937 to 1940 with a 3-metre wheelbase, 10 cm longer, and a swing rear axle for customers who wanted the more modern chassis; many were bodied by the group's Horch works.
Wanderer of Chemnitz built bicycles, motorcycles and, from 1913, cars; in 1932 it became one of the four rings of Auto Union with Audi, DKW and Horch. Its six-cylinder W models of the late 1930s were the group's upper-middle class, and car production ended with the war.
The available examples are all from the 1937 model year.
