The Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.3-16 uses the 2,299 cc sixteen-valve inline-four based on the M102, with a light-alloy cylinder head developed and cast by Cosworth, twin overhead camshafts, a bore and stroke of 95.5 by 80.25 mm and Bosch K-Jetronic injection, rated at 185 PS (136 kW) at 6,200 rpm and 236 Nm at 4,500 rpm, for a top speed of 230 km/h and 0 to 100 km/h in under eight seconds, with a Getrag five-speed manual gearbox with a dog-leg pattern, first gear being left and down, and a limited-slip differential at the rear wheels.

The engine began as a Cosworth rally project, and the series car was needed to race a 190 in the German touring car championship. It made its debut at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show, after three cars had averaged 247.94 km/h over 50,000 km at Nardò in August. An enlarged 2.5-litre engine replaced the 2.3 in 1988.
