Two motors drive the car, a permanent-magnet synchronous reluctance unit at the rear and an induction motor at the front. From 2021 the battery holds 82 kWh, and the car charges at up to 250 kW on direct current. The update of late 2020 added a heat pump, a powered boot lid, black instead of chrome exterior trim and double-glazed side windows for a quieter cabin.

Tesla built this first-generation dual-motor Model 3 at Fremont, in California, and at its Shanghai factory from June 2018 to January 2024, when the restyled Highland version took over.
