The engine sits front mid-mounted and drives the rear wheels, the bodyshell is carbon fibre by ATR on a steel chassis by ITCA, and the cars were finished at the Maserati plant in Modena. Five hundred coupés were built from 2007 to 2009 and 329 spiders from 2008 to 2010, 829 cars in all, the coupé weighing 1,585 kg.

The 8C name goes back to the eight-cylinder Alfa Romeos of the 1930s, and the Competizione takes its shape from the 6C 2500 that raced at Le Mans in 1948. It was Alfa Romeo's return to a hand-built, small-series car.
