The Mercedes-AMG SLS Roadster uses the 6,208 cc M159 naturally aspirated V8 with dry-sump lubrication, mounted behind the front axle, rated at 571 PS (420 kW) at 6,800 rpm and 650 Nm, with a seven-speed AMG Speedshift dual-clutch transaxle at the rear axle, linked to the engine by a carbon fibre driveshaft. The SLS was the first car designed from scratch by AMG, on an aluminium spaceframe; the roadster of 2011 to 2013 trades the coupé's gullwing doors for conventional ones and a fabric hood that opens in eleven seconds.

Mercedes-AMG has been based at Affalterbach since 1976 and belonged to Daimler outright since 2005. Its rule of one man, one engine puts the builder's signature plate on each hand-assembled V8 and V12, and the GT and the SLS are the cars AMG designed from the ground up rather than reworked.
