About the Mercedes-AMG SLS

The structure is an aluminium spaceframe weighing 241 kg, the engine set behind the front axle and the gearbox over the rear one, for a 47:53 weight split. The SLS was the first car AMG designed and built entirely on its own, and its gullwing doors are hinged at the roof, a form taken from the 300 SL of 1954.

Mercedes-AMG has been based at Affalterbach since 1976 and belonged to Daimler outright since 2005. Its rule of one man, one engine puts the builder's signature plate on each hand-assembled V8 and V12, and the GT and the SLS are the cars AMG designed from the ground up rather than reworked.
