The base is the separate chassis of the Bentley R Type, with independent coil-spring front suspension, semi-elliptic leaf springs at the rear and 12.25-inch drums, hydraulic at the front and mechanical at the rear through a gearbox-driven servo. The B range was first meant for cars and became, from 1943, the family of engines for the British Army's wheeled vehicles; eight-cylinder versions also powered the Rolls-Royce Phantom IV.
Bentley built the R Type at Crewe from 1952 to 1955, 2,323 cars; it was the Mark VI with a boot almost twice as large.
The available examples are all from the 1952 model year.
