Marcello Gandini at Bertone drew the wedge with its scissor doors. Marchesi built the partial spaceframe of steel tubing, finished at Sant'Agata, and the unstressed body panels are 1.5 mm aluminium. The dry weight is 1,065 kg on Michelin XWX tyres. Its rear-view mirror looks out through a channel in the roof, the periscope that gave the first series its nickname, and the badges say only Lamborghini and Countach.
The LP400 is the first production Countach, built from 1974 to 1978 after the prototype shown at Geneva in 1971; 157 were made, fewer than any later series.
The available examples are all from the 1974 model year.
