At 310 kW the M139 was, on its introduction, the most powerful four-cylinder in series production anywhere, at 104 kW per litre; it is the first AMG four to combine port and direct injection. AMG turned the block through 180 degrees: the intake sits at the front, the turbocharger and exhaust headers between engine and firewall.

Mercedes-AMG assembles the M139 at Affalterbach, where it has built its engines since 1976.
