The BMW Z8 uses the 4,941 cc naturally aspirated S62 V8 with two overhead camshafts per bank and four valves per cylinder, built by BMW Motorsport, shared with the E39 M5 and set lengthwise behind the front axle, rated at 400 PS (294 kW) at 6,600 rpm and 500 Nm at 3,800 rpm, with a six-speed manual gearbox driving the rear wheels.

Henrik Fisker drew the Z8 after the BMW 507 roadster of 1956 to 1959; the Z07 concept was shown in Tokyo in 1997 and the production car at the 1999 Frankfurt show. From March 2000 to July 2003 BMW built 5,703 cars by hand, and Alpina sold a further 555 Roadster V8 derived from it.
