The Jaguar E-Type 3.8 Series 1 uses the 3,781 cc XK straight-six with three SU carburettors, taken from the XK150 S, rated at 265 bhp, or 269 PS (198 kW), at 5,500 rpm and 325 Nm, for a claimed top speed of 150 mph (241 km/h), with a Moss four-speed manual gearbox without synchromesh on first gear, driving the rear wheels.

Malcolm Sayer designed the E-Type, which was based on the D-Type racing car that won Le Mans three years running from 1955. Built at Coventry, the Series 1 appeared in March 1961, at first for export only, and kept the 3.8-litre engine until the 4.2 arrived in October 1964. Jaguar made 7,828 open two-seaters with the 3.8-litre engine.
