The E 53 is the only AMG version of the C238 coupé and A238 cabriolet, which share a 2,873 mm wheelbase and replaced the C207 and A207 models. The A238 cabriolet was unveiled at the 2017 Geneva motor show, and Mercedes-AMG announced the facelifted E 53 coupé and cabriolet on 27 May 2020.

Mercedes-Benz built the E-Class coupé and cabriolet of the 213 family at Bremen, and the CLE took over from both.
