Fibreglass front end, bonnet, tail panel, boot lid and side scoops, high-beam lamps in the grille, an integrated Kamm-type spoiler and sequential taillights from the 1965 Thunderbird set the Shelby apart from the Mustang it was built on, as a fastback or a convertible. It weighs about 1,470 kg and keeps the four seats of the Mustang fastback.
For 1968 Ford took the Shelby away from Los Angeles and built it at Ionia, Michigan, from Mustangs made in New Jersey and finished by A.O. Smith; the Cobra name joined the badge, and from April 1968 the GT500KR with the Cobra Jet engine replaced this first 1968 version.
