Hans Ledwinka and Erich Übelacker drew the T87 before aerodynamics were a normal part of car design: rear-engined, air-cooled, and shaped as a full teardrop after the streamlining principles of the zeppelin designer Paul Jaray.

The dorsal fin is a stabiliser, not decoration, holding the long tail straight in a crosswind. Behind the rear axle sits an all-magnesium overhead-cam V8, fed by large rear scoops. Three headlights look forward from an engineless bonnet, the central one predating the Tucker 48 by more than a decade. Inset door handles, skirted rear wheels and flush fenders give a measured drag coefficient of about 0.36, extraordinary for 1936.

Inside there is bench seating for six, Bauhaus in feel, with a central speedometer. The backbone chassis runs the length of the car, with independent suspension at all four corners and hydraulic brakes. Tatra built 3,056 between 1936 and 1950.
