The BMW 750iL uses the 5,379 cc naturally aspirated M73 60-degree V12, with a single overhead camshaft per bank and two valves per cylinder, rated at 326 PS (240 kW) at 5,000 rpm and 490 Nm at 3,900 rpm, with a five-speed ZF automatic gearbox driving the rear wheels. The E38 introduced a completely new multi-link rear axle, which BMW calls the integral axle, and was the first 7 Series with a CAN bus network. ASC+T traction control is fitted, and DSC III stability control was optional on the 750i and 750iL from 1995 before becoming standard across the range with the 1998 facelift. The iL is the long-wheelbase saloon: 3,070 mm between the axles instead of 2,930 mm, and 5,124 mm overall instead of 4,985 mm. The E38 was the first car available with curtain airbags and the first European car to offer satellite navigation; double glazing was available.
