The 428 uses the tubular chassis of the Cobra 427 Mark III lengthened by 6 inches (152 mm), with coil springs and independent suspension all round and Girling disc brakes on all four wheels. The chassis were shipped to Pietro Frua in Turin, who designed and fitted the steel body; the coupé weighs about 1,426 kg. It measures 4,420 mm in length on a 2,438 mm wheelbase.

The AC 428 uses the Ford FE 428 V8 of about 7.0 litres, cast iron block and heads, a single camshaft in the block and a four-barrel Autolite carburettor, rated at 345 hp (257 kW) at 4,600 rpm, a top speed of 141 to 145 mph (227 to 233 km/h) and 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 to 6.2 seconds depending on the gearbox.
The AC 428 drives through a close-ratio four-speed Ford Toploader manual on the first cars, then a three-speed Ford C6 automatic on nearly all the rest, driving the rear wheels.
