It keeps the floorpan, independent suspension and 2,615 mm wheelbase of the Nissan Leopard F31, under hand-formed aluminium panels fixed to a steel frame, and is about 30 cm shorter than the Leopard. The door mirrors sit in fairings that run from the bonnet over the front wheels, and the cabin is trimmed in Italian leather with real wood on the dashboard.
Shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1989, the Stelvio was assembled by hand at Zagato in Milan from mechanical parts shipped from Japan. Two hundred were planned; the end of the Japanese bubble stopped production in 1990 at around one hundred.
The available examples are all from the 1990 model year.
