A central high-pressure hydraulic system feeds the hydropneumatic suspension, the brakes and the power steering, and lets the driver vary the ground clearance; since 1966 it runs on LHM fluid. The front discs are mounted inboard on a dual-circuit, load-sensitive brake system, the driven front wheels hang on double wishbones, and the track is 1,516 mm at the front against 1,316 mm at the rear. The saloon is 4,874 mm long, 1,803 mm wide and 1,470 mm high on a 3,125 mm wheelbase. The single-spoke steering wheel sits on a curved column, twin headlamps have stood behind glass since autumn 1967, and the door handles have been recessed since autumn 1971. The D Super is more simply equipped than the DS models.
Unveiled at the Paris show on 5 October 1955, the D series was led by the engineer André Lefèbvre and the designer Flaminio Bertoni, with hydropneumatics by Paul Magès. The ID 20 became the D Super in 1969, keeping the simpler position in the range, and 1,456,115 cars of the series were built up to 24 April 1975.
