The Jaguar E-Type 3.8 uses the 3,781 cc Jaguar XK straight-six from the XK150 S, twin overhead camshafts and three SU carburettors, rated at 269 PS (198 kW) at 5,500 rpm, with a Moss four-speed manual gearbox, without synchromesh on first gear, driving the rear wheels. A front subframe carrying the engine, front suspension and bonnet bolts to the largely unitary body tub, with independent coil-spring rear suspension, torsion bars at the front and four-wheel disc brakes, inboard at the rear. The first 500 cars had flat floors and external bonnet latches. Unveiled at Geneva on 15 March 1961, the 3.8 was built until October 1964: 7,670 coupés and 7,828 open two-seaters.
