The Jaguar E-Type 4.2 uses the 4,235 cc Jaguar XK straight-six in a redesigned, longer block, twin overhead camshafts and three SU carburettors, rated at 269 PS (198 kW) at 5,400 rpm and 384 Nm, with an all-synchromesh four-speed gearbox of Jaguar design driving the rear wheels. The engine grew to 4.2 litres in October 1964 with larger bores and a modified crankshaft, raising torque by 18%; an alternator replaced the dynamo, the electrics switched to negative earth and the brake servo became more reliable. The front subframe still bolts to the body tub. Series 1 4.2 production reached 5,830 coupés, 6,749 open two-seaters and 3,616 2+2 coupés, the latter added in 1966.
