The Ferrari Dino 308 GT4 uses the 2,927 cc Dino V8 with aluminium alloy block and heads, 16 valves and belt-driven double overhead camshafts, fed by four Weber 40 DCNF carburettors, rated at 255 PS (188 kW) in European specification, with a five-speed transaxle gearbox built in unit with the transversely mounted engine, driving the rear wheels.

Shown at the Paris Motor Show in October 1973, the 308 GT4 was the first production Ferrari with a rear mid-mounted V8. It wore Dino badges until May 1976, then the Prancing Horse; the earlier series has a twin-distributor engine and fog lamps mounted in the front valance. 2,826 were built before the Mondial 8 replaced it in 1980.
