Ercole Spada drew the lightened body at Zagato, hand-built entirely in aluminium with plexiglass windows; the last thirty or so cars have the longer Kamm tail, the Coda Tronca, and front disc brakes. The SZ helped Alfa Romeo win the 1.3-litre class of the International Championship for GT Manufacturers in 1962 and 1963.
Zagato first rebodied 18 Sprint Veloces as the SVZ; the production SZ, Tipo 101.26, was premiered at Geneva in 1960 and built from December 1959 into 1962, 217 in all by the usual count.
The available examples are all from the 1961 model year.
