Jensen built the bodies and BMC assembled the cars at the MG works in Abingdon. The BJ8 made servo-assisted brakes standard, with discs at the front and drums at the rear; from May 1964 the Phase II gained ground clearance through a modified rear chassis. The new dashboard put the speedometer and rev counter directly in front of the driver.
Announced in February 1964, the Mark III was the last of the 3000 line begun in 1959; 17,712 were built until the end of 1967.
