About the Mercedes-Benz G Class

Body on frame, with three fully locking differentials, which almost no other passenger car offers. The works codes run W460 from 1979, W461 for military and public service use, W463 from 1990, which turned the G from a utilitarian machine into a luxury one, then W464 and W465. Magna Steyr assembles it at Graz, as it has from the start.

The G-Class began as a joint project between Daimler-Benz and Steyr-Daimler-Puch in 1972, and the Shah of Iran is credited with suggesting it. It was launched at Toulon in September 1979. The engine range across the W463 alone runs from four cylinders to twelve, from naturally aspirated to twin-turbocharged, which is why the cars listed here differ so widely.
