The GT3 has always used a naturally aspirated flat-six, and its displacement has climbed with the generations: 3.6 litres on the 996, 3.6 to 4.0 on the 997, 3.8 to 4.0 on the 991, 4.0 on the 992. The Touring version drops the fixed wing for a retractable spoiler, and was built for buyers who wanted the manual gearbox.

The GT3 name appeared in 1999, as a homologation model for the GT class, six years before the Group GT3 regulations that now carry the same name. Its lineage runs back to the 911 Carrera RS of 1973.
