About the Mercedes-Benz 280 SL

The hardtop dips in the middle instead of curving up, and that concave line, patented by Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi, is what gave the car the name pagoda. It lowers the roof at the sides so a passenger can get in without stooping. Mercedes-Benz sold the car with a soft top, with the hardtop, or with both, and a version without any roof at all, called California, carried a rear bench where the folded fabric would have gone.

Mercedes-Benz built 23,885 of the 280 SL at Stuttgart and Sindelfingen between December 1967 and February 1971, more than half of them sold in the United States. It is the last and the most powerful of the three W113 engines.
