The Neue Klasse saved BMW: the marque was near bankruptcy in 1959 and had nearly been bought by Daimler-Benz. This car, with a monocoque body, independent suspension at both ends and an overhead-camshaft engine, sold well enough to pay for everything the marque became.
BMW built the New Class at Munich from 1962 to 1972. The M10 engine that came with it stayed in production until 1988, and a turbocharged version of it won the Formula One world championship in 1983.
The available examples are all from the 1968 model year.
