About the BMW 5 Series

Eight generations since 1972, each known by its works code: E12, E28, E34, E39, E60, F10, G30 and the G60 of 2024. Bodies have included the saloon, the Touring estate and, from 2009 to 2017, the Gran Turismo fastback. Engines run from naturally aspirated fours and sixes on the early cars to turbocharged sixes, V8s, a V10 in the M5, diesels, hybrids and the electric i5.

The 5 Series is BMW's oldest nameplate still in production and its second best seller after the 3 Series. Half a century of the name covers everything from a four-cylinder diesel to a V10, which is why the cars listed here differ so widely. BMW has built cars at Munich since 1928, and the plant beside the headquarters still makes the 5 Series line.
