Airmatic replaces the steel springs with air bellows and adjusts the damping as it goes: the car can lower itself at speed, raise itself over a kerb, and keep its height whatever it carries. The W220 was the first S-Class offered with Distronic, a cruise control that reads the distance to the car ahead with radar and holds it, and the first with keyless entry through a card rather than a key.

Mercedes-Benz built the W220 S-Class at Sindelfingen from 1998 to 2005. It was the first S-Class with air suspension as standard equipment, and the first to carry the marque's radar cruise control.
