Every W126 rides on a double-wishbone front axle and a semi-trailing arm rear axle, and the 500 and 560 models add an anti-squat device that limits the dip of the tail under hard acceleration. ABS has been standard on the V8 cars since the end of 1984, the self-levelling HPF III hydropneumatic suspension was an option, and the 560 SEL weighs 1,830 kg. The SEL is the long-wheelbase saloon, with 3,075 mm between the axles, up to 5,160 mm in length and 1,820 mm in width. Rear passengers could have individually heated seats, a bench that slides electrically by 10 cm, foot rests and, from 1987, an electric rear window blind; individual rear seats with a centre console were offered from the 1985 model year.

Daimler-Benz built the W126 S-Class at Sindelfingen from 1979 to 1991, 818,072 saloons in all, which makes it the most successful S-Class generation to date. The 560 SEL arrived with the second series shown at the Frankfurt IAA in 1985, its 5.5-litre V8 being the most powerful engine ever fitted to the range, and 75,071 were built.
