About the Porsche 912

The 912 shares the 911's unitary steel body and running gear, with struts and longitudinal torsion bars in front and semi-trailing arms with transverse torsion bars behind, on a 2,211 mm wheelbase until the 1969 model year lengthened it. With four cylinders rather than six in the tail it carries less weight over the rear wheels and is less inclined to oversteer than the early 911. A compact 2+2 drawn by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, sold as a coupé and, from the 1967 model year, as a Targa with a removable roof and a zip-out plastic rear window.

Porsche began building the 912 at Zuffenhausen on 5 April 1965 as the entry model that took over from the 356, made more than 32,000 of them until July 1969, and handed that role to the 914.
