About the Porsche 356

A four-cylinder air-cooled engine behind the rear axle, from 1.1 to 2.0 litres, on a car built in four series: the pre-A of 1948 to 1955 at 7,627 cars, the A at 21,045, the B at 30,963 and the C at 16,678. The Carrera versions took the Fuhrmann four-cam racing engine, introduced late in 1954.

The 356 is Porsche's first production car. The first fifty or so were built at Gmünd in Austria before the company moved to Zuffenhausen in 1950, and about 76,313 were made in all before production ended in April 1965. A class win at Le Mans in 1951 set the marque's reputation.
